Believe it or not, your holistic Optometrist plays a critical role in managing healthcare costs by early detection of illness, by motivating patients to control their blood sugar and helping ensure good control of the diabetes. The retina can reveal small micro-hemorrhages, swelling and/or new blood vessel growth.

How is that possible?

Well, we know that the eyes are the windows to your health. And we know that when your optometrist sees something when she examines your eyes, it is not in isolation. There is a broader cause that needs to be explored and identified. Research studies contribute to the depth of knowledge used to help us navigate the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases that lead patients on the road to good health. At Eyes Focused on You, we believe that an integrative health approach is needed to create wellness.

According to an article at, promising research shows that Type 2 diabetes can be put into long-term remission for up to 10 years through lifestyle changes. The study suggests that long term excess intake of food impacts the fat that is built up in the liver, causing it to respond poorly to insulin. Dr. Hertzel Gerstein, a diabetes expert at McMaster University, is conducting a series of trials studying ways to reverse the condition using a combination of diet, exercise, counselling and short-term drug therapy.

Unfortunately, the goal of remission is not routinely offered to patients right now because it isn’t guaranteed to work for everybody and is most effective when introduced early. But as an alternative to lifelong drugs it seems like a safe and healthy treatment alternative. The positive byproducts of healthy eating, regular exercise and ongoing emotional support sound like solid recommendations for a host of ailments not to mention a logical approach to staying well in the first place.

Diabetes is on the rise

The number of adults with diabetes has quadrupled worldwide in under four decades to 422 million, and the condition is fast becoming a major problem in poorer countries, according to the World Health Organization. Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition characterized by insulin resistance. Patients can manage their diabetes with medication and diet, but the disease is often life-long and is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation. Obesity is the most important risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. If we are to make any headway in halting the rise of diabetes, we need to rethink our daily lives: to eat healthily, be physically active, and avoid excessive weight gain.

Dr. Jan Hux, the chief science officer at the Canadian Diabetes Association, said in this country, people with diabetes account for:

  • 30% of strokes.
  • 40% of heart attacks.
  • 50% of kidney failure requiring dialysis.
  • 70% of amputations.

Researchers estimate the global cost of diabetes is $825 billion US dollars per year. In Canada in 2014, the costs to the health system directly was $8 billion.

Eyes Focused on You invests in diagnostic technology such as the Optomap to detect bleeds long before symptoms arise making early intervention possible. We offer a cutting edge research-based therapy to help treat diabetic neuropathy and improve vascular outcomes. We are aligned with other health care providers such as a dietician, personal trainer, and naturopath to provide better options to our patients. We are BETTER TOGETHER!
Through early diagnosis and commitment to healthful living, we can all do our part to help pare down the high cost of diabetes.
