Iris is an important member of our team and helps us spread our message - emphasizing the importance of eye exams for young pupils!
The Eye See Eye Learn Program was piloted by Dr. Caroline Teske for the Halton Hills region and has been an integral part of successful learning in young students.
- 80% of learning is visual, making eye exams crucial to ensure each child is learning to the best of their ability.
- 60% of children with literacy challenges hae undiagnosed vision problems.
- Children should have their first eye exam at 6 months and annually from then on.

Ben Thompson completed his BSc and PhD in the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Sussex, UK. He then completed postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Psychology, UCLA, USA and the Department of Ophthalmology, McGill University. Prior to joining us at Waterloo, Dr. Thompson was an Associate Professor in Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Dr. Thompson’s research is concerned with human visual cortex development and plasticity, particularly in promoting plasticity to improve outcomes for patients with brain-based visual disorders. This has led to an interest in amblyopia, and to the development of two new and highly promising approaches to treatment.

WHAT IS VISION THERAPY?Vision Therapy is a doctor supervised program designed to improve the processing part of the visual system. Vision therapy is not simply eye exercises. It is a scientifically-based program combined with careful history, visual examination and dedicated participation and can change a person's visual function and life. The therapy is individualized to the unique needs of the patient.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM VISION THERAPY?Vision therapy can have dramatic results for many patients. patients with lazy eye or eye turn traumatic brain injury or concussion learning difficulties or attention deficit disorders depth perception problems sports performance enhancement.
HOW DOES VISION THERAPY WORK?An initial vision therapy assessment is performed by a behavioural optometrist to determine a strategy or plan for therapy. Most Vision Therapy is conducted in-office, in a weekly session lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour. There are often homework items to supplement in-office work. A therapy program can last from 20 weeks to a year or more depending on the individual’s diagnosis, their age and their commitment and participation level in the program. After each 10 week sessions the patient has a re-evaluation to measure progress.
